I don't know when we, or at least many of us, started to use'Stash'as the general term to cover the increasing number of kits that gathered in dark corners while waiting to be selected to fulfil their manifest destiny on a workbench. We all knew someone who collected kits as an end in itself, and even if it was just a focused selection - and this was by no means usual in my earlier years - their tally often became a source of some pride with the quantity being of as much consequence as quality, although rarity often played a part and inhibited many kits being made at all. Where the boxes huddled varied, with differing degrees of visibility. For those whose intention was to build the boxes' contents - sometimes sooner, sometimes later -they accumulated within easy reach of the workbench or its travelling substitute, whereas others were segregated in a semi-secret - indeed sometimes carefully concealed - corner, even in some cases a loft or in garages that had never known a car.
