To make things a little harder, he also opted for an open canopy, and then re-profiled the flying surfaces...rnBetween March and July 1951 the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) took possession of 97 Gloster Meteor F.Mk 8 fighters (and a few T.Mk 7 trainers) sent to Australia from the UK and then on to Iwakuni, Japan, where No. 77 Sqn, RAAF, began working up on them. The squadron had hoped to replace its ageing F-51 Mustangs with the outstanding swept-wing F-86, but the US was unable to supply the type. The F.Mk 8 was principally developed and deployed as a fighter, but in reality it proved inferior in this role when pitched against the nimble, swept-wing MiG-15, and so as the Christmas of 1952 approached the Australian pilots began to sing 'all I want for Christmas is my wings swept back!' Although No. 77 Sqn's pilots did remarkably well in the next few months, surviving MiG-15 clashes more by pilot skill than aircraft performance, the situation nevertheless had to change.
