Do we have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) crisis in America? If so, are we adequately addressing it? Crisis is such a strong word. Starting with A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education (NCEE), 1983) up to the present day, most of us reading this would opine that we do have a crisis, but I am not as sure as I once was. For the record, I believe there is more than enough room for educational improvements and there are huge gaps that need to be addressed, especially in regard to gender and race, but I do not believe there is a crisis. Further, the manufacturing of this "crisis" has sometimes allowed those best tasked with improving teaching in STEM to be placed under the guidance of competing interests with little understanding of educational processes and techniques.
