Testing has been around for centuries, but recently there has been a considerable increase in high-stakes testing across the United States. In 2002, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law was the first to mandate nationwide testing at various grade levels. More recently, Race to the Top funding has required testing of students to evaluate teachers. The US education system is spending billions per year on math and science testing, along with other subjects, which are being tested across the school year and across the grade levels, with very little or mixed research supporting their effectiveness.
