Stannic oxide (SnO2) nanoplate-assembled hierarchical microstructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, and their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties were studied in detail. The as-prepared SnO powders were calcined at 500 degrees C to create the oxidized SnO2 ones. These powder samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV/Vis absorption measurements. The newly synthesized SnO2 powder samples exhibited a pure tetragonal phase with P42/mnm (136) space group, and they were used as a photocatalytic material under UV light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the SnO2 nanoplate-assembled samples was investigated with a photodegradable dye, i.e., rhodamine B (RhB) solution, by varying the irradiation time. Photodegradation rates of similar to 20 and 51.6%, respectively, were obtained without and with the SnO2 photocatalyst in the RhB solution for an irradiation time of 7 h.
