Synthesis and Visible Light Photo-Electrochemical Behavior of In_2O_3-Sensitized TiO_2 Nanorod Arrays

ln_2O_3-sensitized TiO_2 nanorod arrays (NRs) was prepared on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glass substrates by a facile two-step process. The as-prepared samples were characterized by field-emission electron scanning microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible reflection spectrophotometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photo-electrochemical properties of the TiO_2 NRs photoelectrodes before and after being sensitized with ln_2O_3 nanoparticles were investigated under visible light illumination. The results show that the photocurrent of ln_2O_3-sensitized TiO_2 NRs is dramatically enhanced compared with that of the TiO_2 NRs or ln_2O_3 nanoparticles under visible light illumination. The enhanced photocurrent is attributed to the coupling effects of ln_2O_3 nanoparticles and TiO_2 NRs. This method is also suitable for the synthesis of other narrow band-gap semiconductor-sensitized TiO_2 NRs, which can be used in solar cells and photocatalysis filed.
