Preparation and Shape-Modification of Silver Colloids by Laser Ablation in Liquids: A Brief Review

Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) concentrates much attention as a novel technique to fabricate colloidal nanopar-ticles (NPs) of various materials. One of the advantageous points of this technique toward usual chemical synthesis technique is the absence of unnecessary reagents in colloidal solutions obtained. However, to utilize NPs obtained by LAL in various applications, influences of various substances added into solvent should be clarified, because NPs will be mixed with other materials such as binders in applications. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a famous polymer which is used to stabilize colloidal metal NPs. In this review, we introduce the influences of PVP for NPs obtained using LAL. First, the fundamental aspects of LAL in PVP such as formation efficiency, particle size and stability are described. Second, we describe the further shape modification of NPs, which are prepared using LAL, by means of the post laser irradiation (PLI) technique. The PLI is a useful technique to reduce the size and size distribution of NPs. In the case of silver NPs dispersed in PVP solution, another interesting phenomenon, the formation of nanocrystals, can be also observed. The mechanism of the influences of PVP on the LAL and PLI processes is discussed.
