Malaria is a serious health problem in many developing countries including India. According to the World Health Organisation, in 2015, there were roughly 214 million malaria cases and an estimated 4,38,000 malaria deaths worldwide although in India, malaria cases have shown a sharp decline since 2000. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2015, the region was home to 89% of malaria cases and 91% of malaria deaths, including 3,05,000 African children who died before their fifth birthdays.
