摘要

On a bright sunny morning of January, 1951 a 31 year old brilliant Jewish woman scientist Rosalind Franklin stepped into King's College, London. She knocked the door of Prof John Randall and entered. He cordially welcomed her to King's College Biophysics Unit. Prof Randall was the Director. He entrusted her with the task of setting up a laboratory to study DNA fibers using X-ray crystallography independently, in order that atoms constituting the DNA molecule can be precisely mapped by looking at the image under X-ray beam. DNA is too tiny to see even under microscope. It may be few millimeters long but is only 0.000002 millimeter wide. So no photography was possible. Till then nobody knew what it looks like and how it is built up. Prof Randall knew Franklin acquired expertise in X-ray diffraction techniques at State Central Chemistry Laboratory, Paris. He hoped that crystallography might help scientists to unravel the structure of DNA.
