According to a survey of scientific literature produced over the past two decades that claims to be the most comprehensive of its kind, an overwhelming majority of scientists agree that humans have caused global warming. And one of the major consequences of global warming is loss of snow and ice cover in the Polar Regions and on the world's mountains. A glaring example is the extensive retreat of glaciers in the Mount Everest region in the Himalayas. A recent study has shown that glaciers in the Mount Everest region have shrunk by 13 percent in the last 50 years and the snowline has shifted upward by 180 metres. The study was conducted by a research team led by Sudeep Thakuri, who led the team as part of his PhD graduate studies at the University of Milan in Italy.
