摘要

While undertaking studies to assess and evaluate the environmental impact on the aquatic life on the commissioning of a Lift- Irrigation Project across the Varada river, located close to Kudal - Sangameshwar village in Haveri taluk/ district, swarms of free - swimming forest of flower animals, fresh water Medusae, Limnocnida indica Annandale1'2 were observed on 25.02.2011. These were found distributed in varied concentrations in the river course covering a distance of around 20 Kms. The fishermen at Kudal, Devgiri, Mannangi and Dombarghatta reported that the fauna could be seen upto the confluence point of the Varada river with the Tungabhadra river at Galaganatha (20 kms from Kudal Village). The pulsating milky -white translucent jelly - like bodies in varied sizes, moving up and down with clinical precision, were found distributed in most parts of the river niches. These were also found clogging the gill nets being operated in the river course.
