Sixty years after the historic revelation of the double-helix structure of DNA by Warson and Crick in 1953 comes the news of another remarkable discovery — that of four-stranded 'quadruple-helix' DNA structure in the human genome - by a team of researchers led by Shankar Balasubramanian at the University of Cambridge, UK . The so-called 'G-quadruplex structures' of DNA have been known to scientists and they can easily be created in the laboratory by the folding of synthetic DNA double-helix strands rich in guanine, but their presence within living cells was not known earlier.
