Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the world-renowned Bengali poet, writer, philosopher and artist was the representative of Indian culture to the world and the voice of India's spiritual heritage. In 1913, Tagore became the first Non-European person, first in Asia and Africa to achieve the world's highest Award - Nobel prize. He was awardee in Literature for his book 'Gitanjali' (Offering of Songs). Entire Europe and Western world became overwhelmed by his masterpiece 'World Literature' Gitanjali during his time that gained worldwide acclamation. Great English poet William Butler Yeats, referring to Tagore's poems had mentioned: 'They have stirred my blood as nothing has for years'. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan connoted Tagore as 'the greatest figure of the Indian renaissance'. Nobel Laureate Bertrand Russell considered him as 'worthy of the highest honour'. Year 2013 marks the completion of one hundred years of Tagore's Nobel award. His life and contributions give expressions of his hidden aptitude, perseverance, endeavour and thirst for innovations. His unique brilliance, foresight and retrospection are reflected in his immensely beautiful and sensitive poetries, songs, essays, novels, dance dramas and short stories. His two works became the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
