What a question - Does India know itself'? India is a country. Do countries have minds to know themselves? Of course they do not. Countries are only demarcated spaces, geological entities. They cannot, do not think, feel. They cannot ideate. India as Jambu-dvipa and Bharatvarsha is a geo-historical template. And yet the mythic imaginations of people living in it, visiting it and studying, have built legends around it, in epic, classical and popular depictions. These imaginings have made India interchangeable with a goddess-like figure, Mother India. There, in that living imagination, India becomes not just self-aware but self-confident, immutable, deathless. There it is not an inert, dead geological mass.
