According to "Plate Tectonic" theory, upper crust of the Earth, i.e, lithosphere is divided into seven / eight large and very large pieces, called intercontinental plates. These plates are floating at a snail's pace on the semi-molten liquid materials, which stay beneath the lithosphere of the Earth. With such movement of the plates, they sometimes come closer, skid either upward or downward direction according to the situation and sometimes collide face to face. And the net outcome in all the above-mentioned cases is occurrence of major earthquakes.
