Researchers interested in developing renewable energy resources are investigating the use of single-celled algae commonly known as microalgae, which are regarded as a potential source of lipids that could be converted into a fuel substitute known as biodiesel. Biodiesel is produced by transesterification of the triglycerides with short chain alcohols in the presence of a suitable catalyst.
