I must first record my gratitude to three benefactors, Bose, Saha and Mahalanobis who helped me to become what I am. All of them were men with a wide range of interests. All three set examples of doing worthwhile work in India without migrating abroad. My earliest memory of Professor S. N. Bose dates from that summer evening when I just burst into his study at the University of Dacca (now Dhaka). The second World War was still continuing and I had about just finished school. I visitcd him, armed with a note explaining my views on how the expanding universe would influence Michelson Morley's experiment.
