摘要

Quality of jute is principally evaluated by physical measurements of strength and fineness of the fibre obtained after retting of jute stem. The measurements are done on the sample of fibre reeds or bundles of fibre, each being made up of several individual cells. The developmental biology of fibre cells and their bundles that is responsible for the strength and fineness is poorly understood. This paper discusses the implication of relative amount of wall forming chemicals as well as the development of secondary phloem fibre cells and intervening parenchyma ray cells in modulating the strength and fineness of jute fibre. It is proposed that the biology of jute fibre development needs to be studied in more detail, preferably with the aid of newer biological techniques, before attempting to manipulate the fibre quality of jute.
