摘要

Every individual is expected to know the law. A fundamental principle in jurisprudence is that 'ignorance of law is not excusable'. India has excellent laws to protect the environment, what is needed is implementation, which is the equal responsibility of all concerned. The article outlines some of the environmental laws and rules, which are applicable in the present Indian scenario. From the time of inception of the first environmental law in India, this article presents an empirical knowledge of the comprehensive environmental legislation in the country framed in the light of global environmental governance. It also accounts the roles and the state of implementation of the laws related to pollution control by the concerned authorities within the state of West Bengal as well as by the State Pollution Control Boards of the country.
