Plant species of diverse photosynthetic systems (C_3, C_4 & CAM) grown during winter season at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan were examined for their photosynthetic O_2 evolution under varying light intensities. Among the plant species tested, the highest O_2 efflux and light saturation points were recorded in the winter loving plants such as Chenopodium quinoa followed by spinach and soybean (C_3 plants), while the standards tropical C_4 plants viz., maize and sugarcane registered lowest O_2 evolution and light saturation points as well. Pineapple and Bryophyllum (CAM plants) showed marked variation in diurnal light response curve, while O_2 evolution rate increased curvilinearly with the intensity of light.
