Millions of aging people receive implants to maintain their quality of life and development of appropriate implant materials to survive longer than the patients has become the challenge of the day. Ceramics with exotic properties are recently being introduced for repair of diseased/ damaged parts of the skeletal system. Typical characteristics of these bioceramics, along with their potential application areas have been discussed and the research trend in Global and Indian institutes including CGCRI has been outlined.
