摘要

Gas detectors are increasingly needed for industrial and domestic safety, environmental monitoring, process control and in defence and strategic sectors. Different types of sensors have been developed for gas detection. Among them, semiconductor sensors based on ceramics (primarily metal oxides) are particularly attractive because of their low cost, long life and ruggedness. This article provides a brief overview of different types of sensors with special emphasis on metal oxide based semiconductor sensors. The fabrication, design and packaging aspects have been highlighted and indigenous efforts in developing semiconductor gas sensors have been mentioned.
