Food Beliefs and Dietary Practices of Traditional Rural Households Near Mysore

The investigation was undertaken to study the dietary practices and food beliefs prevailing in the traditional rural households. A total of 205 mothers from 160 rural households near Mysore were enrolled for the study. Nutritional status of subjects along with their preschool children was determined using standard techniques. The mothers were interviewed using an open-ended questionnaire and information obtained on foods generally avoided for all family members, foods given and avoided during developmental stages of life, sickness and reasons for the same. Results revealed that the study population suffered with many nutritional deficiencies. A wide range of foods was avoided by the rural folk due to beliefs and taboos passed on from generations. These factors deprived all the family members including the newborns of many essential nutrients. The nutritional knowledge of respondents was poor. Social barriers prevented the women from participating in the nutrition education programs and awareness camps held at their reach.
