摘要

Rauwolfia serpentina (Sarpagandha) of family Apocynaceae is a small erect perennial shrub of about 15-45 cm height. In India, the plant grows under wide range of soil types and prefers both tropical and subtropical environments. Roots of this plant have been used in the indigenous Ayurveda or Unani systems of medicine from ancient times. Chopra first discovered the hypotensive property of roots. But the attention of Western Countries generated with the identification of reserpine by the Swiss Scientist, Schillern and Mueller of CIBA Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland. Reserpine has been used in the allopathic systems for the treatment of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and as a sedative tranquilizing agent.
