It is a well known fact that a tetravalent carbon atom has a tetrahedral geometry. This article attempts to address a rather less explored question, 'Will it be possible to stabilize a square planar geometry around a carbon atom?" A number of such example, reviewed from literature, will throw light on this aspect.
