摘要

Alexandria is just 200km up from Cairo on the Mediterranean Coast, a three hour journey by train and when an American friend who lives in Cairo offers to take me I jump at the chance. Again the imagination is on fire with tales of the great Library, said to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World although there is no trace of it now. It is cold and rainy when we arrive but soon brightens and as the skies clear we walk down to the sea where the Library has been completely rebuilt. It is grand and spacious, extremely modern and full of students and people reading. There has been a world class library on this site since Antiquity so quite fitting to build a new one here now.
