Culture and science are not always to be considered as the opposites of nature. In the work of Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan-Sriniketan, involving both the Brahmacharyashram and Visva-Bharati, it became evident that science and culture could help in replenishing the depleted resources of nature. Jonathan Bate, our contemporary, has discussed the evolution of the meaning of the word 'culture'. Following the earlier meaning of culture as related to land, in this paper, Tagore's judicious use of the agricultural and soil science, and culture, through 'Balai' and pedagogy, for re-afforestation, will be discussed, with a special reference to the ideas of Patrick Geddes.
