Henry Petroski, the Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering at Duke University, is the author of more than tiventy-one popular books on engineering and technology, many of which that have been translated into Chinese, Finnish, German, Hebrew, Italian, Korean, fapanese, Spanish, and Turkish. In addition to having published several dozen technical articles on failure analysis and structural engineering in refereed journals, Petroski has become a noted essayist in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. Since 1991, he has also been a columnist for the American Scientist, and the ASEE Prism. This article provides an overview of his life and career, largely in his own words.
