As characterized by Wikipedia, a "social network service focuses on the building and verifying of online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others....Most social network services are primarily Web-based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, [and] discussion groups..." Among the more popular services are Bebo, Facebook and MySpace. The use of social networking services is not limited to tweens, teens, or college students. In recent months, a number of services have emerged focused on a variety of demographic and professional communities. In this SCI-5 column, we profile five select science and technology social networking services that cover a range of disciplines.
