As one can deduce from the tone of this book's subtitle, Grover Furr is an advocate, and this book marks the culmination of the author's years-long effort to counter the popular image of Stalin's years as head of the Soviet Union. Furr has chosen Nikita Khrushchev's 1956 speech denouncing Stalin as the framework for his argument, attempting a point-by-point refutation based on Soviet archive sources. The book is divided into two sections, in the first of which each topic that Khrushchev addressed is given its own chapter or sub-chapter. In the second section, the author has included a collection of quotations taken from various documents, relevant to the various topics. However one assesses the quality of Furr's logic, the lengthy quotations taken from those sources make for interesting reading. In many cases, the author has presented his own translations of documents that are not otherwise available in English translation. In some cases, the author directs the reader to internet links where he has posted his translations of entire documents.
