摘要

To the Editor: Based on ten pond ecosystems with contrasting ammonium (NH~+_4) concentrations, Yu et al. (2017) concluded that shading induced by high phytoplankton biomass together with the toxicity of high ammonium contributed to the decrease of macrophyte growth. Although their result of the whole-lake experiment is evident, we are concerned that concluding 'strong shading' from phytoplankton biomass, the toxicity of 'high ammonium' on submerged macrophyte as the main effects of high nitrogen (N) and neglecting species-specific responses of macro-phytes to high ammonium are probably biased.
