In this era of increased public awareness of climate change issues, there is increasing pressure to implement measures that promise energy production with little or no environmental impact. This book focuses on the potential pitfalls that might be encountered should biofuels produced from agricultural crops, i.e. agro-biofuels, be used as a large-scale replacement for fossil fuels. The authors critically evaluate the risks: specifically the likely shortage in energy production, pressures on food supplies and impact on climate, biodiversity and rural development. They arrive at the conclusion that, whilst the next generation biofuels may have potential, agro-biofuels are not the panacea that many have hoped for.
