Karnovsky, a computational chemist, had offers from other Pfizer locations, but she had already moved her family once from Kalamazoo to Ann Arbor because of work, when her employer, Pharmacia, was absorbed by Pfizer. This time around, she was less willing to move, despite a "generous" relocation package from Pfizer. Her daughter was a junior in high school, her husband was happy at his current job, and with the continued threat of layoffs and reorganizations in the industry, Karnovsky was wary about taking another industry job. Instead, she applied to the University of Michigan for a research faculty position in the School of Medicine to do work similar to what she had done at Pfizer - create models that identified drug targets, or sharpen scientists' hypotheses. Her move was aided by the university, which had pledged $1 million a year for three years to re-hire and retrain Pfizer scientists.
