At Guadalcanal, U.S. Marines met more than a foe determined to drive them off the island - they encountered a tropical climate and diseases that were as much an enemy as the Japanese. Two weeks after the August 1942 landings, a strain of gastroenteritis affected many of the Marines ashore, causing one death. At that time, the first case of dengue fever was recorded. However, malaria proved to be the biggest threat to the Marine defenders.
