The concept of the sovereignty of merchant ships, in particular U.S.-flag ships, is a complicated subject that is given a detailed examination and explanation in this book. The author covers the evolution of the concept of what a flag on a ship means in terms of honor, power, maritime law and sovereignty, and how it affects maritime commerce in peace and war. The book unravels the origins of the concept of "flag of convenience," how flagging gave rise to many conflicts over the last two centuries. Flags of convenience have helped the ships of many nations skirt seizure and exerted significant influence on foreign registry, labor practices, commerce and national honor.
