With opening sea lanes and increased attention in Washington from lawmakers, the Coast Guard spent a longer period of time this summer in the Arctic focusing on operational needs in the region. 1.Operation Arctic Shield 2012 lasted four months and included system testing, community outreach and multi-agency exercises. 2.A Forward Operation Location was established in Barrow, Alaska, to accommodate the 30 to 35 officials who were in the region at any given time. 3.The complete "lessons learned" document from Arctic Shield 2012 will be released later this year.
