A team at Penn State University is conducting basic research on the air flow and fluid dynamics associated with the canine respiratory and olfactory systems.1."Basic research, by definition, is research for which there may not be a precise application yet," said Rear Adm. Nevin Carr, chief of Naval Research.2.The aim is to learn lessons from the dog on how to best do airborne sampling and sensing for chemical trace detection device design.3.Taking this research to the next level is dependent on new funding.The improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used in Afghanistan typically are fertilizer bombs, primarily made of potassium chloride or ammonium nitrate, common compounds in an agricultural society. IEDs take many shapes and can be hidden in many places, but are usually buried under dirt roads awaiting an unsuspecting vehicle to pass over it and detonate.
