摘要

On April 1, 1945, Operation Iceberg commenced with the landing of two Marine and two Army divisions on Okinawa. American control of this Japanese island would cut off sea lanes for fuel and raw materials from the south and provide a logistical base to support an assault on the home islands to the north. The fight for Okinawa had begun weeks earlier with a sustained aerial and shore bombardment campaign mounted by American aircraft and ships. Appreciating the potency of the American firepower, the Japanese commander stationed his more than 100,000 troops away from the beaches. Thus, when the ramps of the landing craft flopped open, the invading Marines and GIs were surprised to find little resistance.
