McCain's death Aug. 25 ends a storied career in both the Navy and in Congress, where the Arizona Republican famously used his position on the Senate Armed Services Committee to simultaneously push for more defense dollars while also demanding more accountability from Defense Department leaders and military brass. He was without doubt the most influential and passionate defense hawk on Capitol Hill, and also one of the Pentagon's most persistent critics. Not even his beloved Navy was immune to a tongue-lashing when he thought taxpayer dollars were being squandered and U.S. security - not to mention lives - put at risk.
