摘要

The author, a teacher and boat builder, inherited a photo and document collection from the marine editor of the newspaper The Oregonian in 1996. After a visit to the D-Day sites in Normandy he realized the value of the trove he had, which told the story of the Kaiser shipbuilding effort during World War Ⅱ. Henry J. Kaiser mobilized American industry into a massive machine, pumping out ships as fast as they could be launched. His shipyards were instrumental in equipping the U.S. Navy with many of the tools that enabled it to achieve victory. This profusely illustrated book tells the story of the Kaiser yard in Vanport City, Oregon, and the contributions of the men and women there who built the escort carriers, tankers, amphibious warfare ships, and Liberty and Victory ships. Other war industries in the Portland area also are covered.
