Peter Shaw-Smith The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts a long maritime history, in the 1970s becoming the first country in the Gulf to open a dedicated container terminal. That Mina Salman port underwent several phases of modernisation and expansion before a decision was taken in the early 2000s to set up a new deepwater Khalifa Bin Salman Port under the auspices of the newly created General Organisation of Sea Ports (see following article). Key to the blueprint was enlisting the services of a private port operator, to which end an international tender went out. Netherlands-based APM Terminals, part of the Maersk group, applied and was duly given the concession to manage KBSP, which opened in April 2009 on a reclaimed promontory in the Hidd area some 5km away from Mina Salman. The port targets transhipment activities with powerful neighbour Saudi Arabia and other countries in the upper Gulf.
