Almost every day we are read about the violation of COLREGs, or see another article about the lack of competence of the mariners of today. However, if we spend too much time judging the officers on watch, we risk neglecting - or even deliberately overlooking - the Master's role in all these near misses. In writing this article, I don't intend to scrutinize the competence of the seamen, but instead to alert Masters about the importance of maintaining their own professional ethics and competence. If we are to set a good example and be mentors to the officers and crew onboard, that example has to start with our own actions.
