Chips&Media was formed in March 2003 to develop MPEG audio and video ICs and IP. In August 2003, the company secured a US$1.5 million government grant for 3 years and in September 2003, a US$1.1 million System IC government grant for 4 years was secured. First round funding was raised in November 2003 and in October 2004, the company closed a US$5 million second round of funding. Chips&Media develops MPEG-2 video/audio/system ICs for digital TV manufacturers and digital set-top box manufacturers and MPEG-4 video/audio ICs designed to support mobile products. The company offers High-Definition MPEG-2 (MP@HL) single-chip decoders, MPEG-2 (MP@ML) codecs for PVR applications, MPEG-4 AVC codecs for mobile applications, and H.264 Audio/Video/System DMB ICs for the consumer segment. The company has developed a proprietary RISC CPU with DSP extensions, a proprietary DSP core for Audio Codec functionality, and numerous peripheral interfaces.
