Having already produced its first domestically built offshore wind farm support vessel, in the form of the 21m, 2016-delivered,Blount Boats-built CTV Atlantic Pioneer, the US is now gearing up to construct its first homebuilt service operations vessel (SOV), as development of the country's offshore wind farm sector gains momentum.The US-flagged vessel will be constructed, engineered and operated by Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO), which manages four shipbuilding facilities in the US and one in Brazil. ECO also specialises in providing port and subsea services, and operates a fleet of more than 300 vessels, including tugs, PSVs and anchor handling towage supply ships, sized up to 160m.While demand for suitable CTVs and SOVs will likely soar in US waters, America's protectionist Jones Act means that these vessel types must be built domestically, excluding the possibility of pooling European- or Asian-built imports. This point was driven home recently when the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act, specifying that Jones Act requirements must be applied across the entire offshore wind energy segment.
