Uraga Dock, the predecessor of Sumitomo Heavy Industries' Uraga Shipyard, was founded in 1897 in Uraga, where Japan's shipbuilding industry was born and Commodore Matthew C. Perry's so-called "Black Ships" arrived during the Edo period. Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd., was established on April 1, 2003 to realize flexible and speedy management to meet the changing market demands, and Sumitomo Heavy Industries' entire shipbuilding business were transferred to this new company. Since reorganization, Yokosuka Shipyard has been devoting its attention to building mid-size tankers, such as Suezmaxes and Aframaxes, with the most advanced technologies to meet future market demands by providing various ship types through improved operations and concise market analysis.
