As key liner conferences take steps to restore battered freight rates, the outlook for some of the world's principal container trades is decidedly uncertain. A range of mixed economic signals from the US is not helping and liner executives still face a record volume of new deliveries, among them some of the largest container vessels ever built. Following the steepest-ever decline in the container trades, which saw the Howe Robinson index plummet from 950 in mid-2001 to its record low of 451.4 in January this year, the world's container lines are clearly hopeful that they can make the rate rises stick, but analysts are less certain. Some believe that the world's principal carriers could be approaching another steep downturn and, far from successfully imposing rises, another round of rate cuts could be more likely on the cards.
