Searching for sand in Florida: Exploiting sea floor morphology as a reconnaissance tool

Beach nourishments using Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) sand have increased in size and frequency over the last 20 years. However, locating suitable sand deposits on the OCS is expensive and time-consuming. This study demonstrates that rugosity and slope analysis of existing publicly available data can be a viable reconnaissance tool when searching for OCS sand deposits. Rugosity is a quantitative measure of the pattern of elevation changes; on the sea floor, high rugosity topography includes shoals and reefs. Rugosity grid maps were computed at five scales, from 10 m to 1000 m, and compared to previously verified sand bodies along the southeast Florida coast. Slope was computed at a scale of 10 m. Analysis of the rugosity maps found that the rugosity of sand bodies is two to four times greater than the rugosity of the shelf as a whole and analysis of the slope maps found that the slope of sand bodies is 0.4° greater than the shelf slope. Findings from these results highlight the importance of conducting analysis at the proper scale. These results led to the development of a rugosity-bracketing-slope (RBS) reconnaissance method. Finally, a coarse-scale rugosity grid was used to calculate east Florida shelf sand reserves, resulting in an estimate between 1.5-3 Gm~3 (2-4 bey).
