摘要

The Los Penasquitos Lagoon (LPL) is a coastal salt marsh preserve located in the Torrey Pines State Reserve in north San Diego County. As with most coastal lagoons in Southern California, urban development during the last century has impacted LPL's ability to operate as a natural system. Development and human activity along the shoreline, within the watershed, and within the lagoon itself have modified the hydrologic processes that affect the lagoon's tidal prism and the inlet's ability to reopen without mechanical assistance. These factors have generated several issues that make mechanized inlet maintenance a necessity. Therefore, excavating the inlet using heavy equipment has been a management priority at LPL. Subsequent studies and monitoring efforts at LPL have indicated the importance of maintaining the lagoon inlet in an open condition during the late spring and summer. Through adaptive management, maintaining the LPL inlet in an open condition has resulted in multiple benefits cost-effectively.
