Storm-driven coastal change, shoreline orientation, and tidal phase: A case study from Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene had weakened to a tropical storm prior to crossing over western Mas sachusetts, but significant erosion occurred on several east-facing beaches more than 350 km (200 miles) to the east. Pre- and post-storm beach profiles were collected, followed by six spring-tide profiles along nine beach transects - five on east-facing ocean beaches and four on west-facing bay beaches. A post-storm, vessel-based acoustic survey was also conducted three days after the storm offshore of one of the transects, using a phase measuring bathymetric sonar. East-facing, ocean beaches experienced erosion up to an order of magnitude greater than west-facing, bay beaches. Subsequent data collection was useful in determining the sediment transport pathways, sediment flux, and coastal evolution on multiple temporal and spatial scales. The acoustic survey documented a large bar composed of sediment likely eroded during the storm and being transported shoreward by fair-weather waves.
