摘要

Dauphin Island is located off the southwestern coastline of Alabama (U.S.A.) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The landfall of Hurricane Katrina on 29 August 2005, created considerable shoreline and beach erosion along the Gulf side of the island and formed a 2.1-km breach (i.e. Katrina Cut) in its undeveloped western barrier spit. The gap in the island also changed the marine conditions in the habitat-sensitive Mississippi Sound. The closing of the Katrina Cut became important not only for the protection of Alabama's commercial fishing and oyster harvesting industries, but also for the protection of its environmentally sensitive estuarine mainland coastline. These problems were further compounded by the explosion and sinking of the Transocean Deepwater Horizon semisubmersible drill rig and the release of millions of gallons of petroleum into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Along the western barrier spit, two shore-parallel sand dunes were constructed facing the Gulf. A special fabric and wireframe fence (HESCO?) was coupled with chemical treatment and installed along much of the Mississippi Sound shoreline. Oil containment booms were also used along the back bay shoreline to prevent petroleum from washing ashore. Concern for crude oil moving through the Katrina Cut into the environmentally sensitive Mississippi Sound accelerated activities that eventually closed the gap in the island. Unfortunately, none of these actions will serve as a long-term solution to island preservation. Only in its capacity as a protective buffer to both the environmentally sensitive estuarine mainland shoreline and economically important state marine natural resources can long-term systematic federal/state funded beach nourishment, armoring, and fortification likely justify preservation of Dauphin Island, Alabama.
